Advertising and Sales Techniques 02: “Your Personal Axis for the Seven Weapons”

Updated: Jul 7

Starting with this lesson, we will begin the process of building your brand as an illustrator.

This process is based on a branding method specialized for illustrators that I developed myself after reading hundreds of books related to branding, marketing, management theory, psychology, sales, and promotion.

In a sense, it could be called a “secret manual” for succeeding as an illustrator.

Please study it carefully and put it into practice.

I am passing this method on to you with the sincere hope that you will be blessed with fulfilling work, financial stability, and a happy life as an illustrator.

■ First, Find Your “Personal Axis”!

In the previous lesson, I talked about the seven weapons that make promotion and sales easier.

Before creating your own seven weapons, it is essential that you first find your personal axis.

By “personal axis,” I mean the fundamental values of your soul, your way of living as a human being, and the unwavering core of your spirit based on your aspirations.

When one personal axis runs through the seven weapons—your pen name, promotional keywords, icon, catchphrase, story, image color, and font—promotion and sales become easier, and you begin to attract more work.

However, if you vaguely decide on a pen name, promotional keywords, icon, catchphrase, story, image color, and font that are all inconsistent and lack unity, you may instead run the risk of driving work away. The very first thing you must do in order to build a strong brand for yourself is to search for your personal axis.

A Bad Example of the Seven Weapons

Let’s consider a fictional illustrator as an example. Suppose there were an illustrator with the following seven weapons. What impression would you have?
